La Famiglia
Tuscany, Italy
La Famiglia is a traditional country farmhouse estate set at the top of hill, surrounded by olive groves. The estate is part of a famous vineyard and rests on the lip of the picturesque Arezzo valley. The valley is not only visually stunning, the whole area around the estate is steeped in history that dates well back to pre-Roman times. Castles, monasteries and medieval villages pepper the region and are wonderful to explore on day trips. One of the most spectacular natural regions in Tuscany is only a few minutes’ drive away, the Casentino Valley. The valley has high hills with steep cliffs, woods that stretch back into antiquity and the area bordered by the Apennine Mountains contains the Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park. The region is also widely known for the quality of its wines.
The villa is located on an old trade route that set out from the Adriatic Sea, passed by the villa and through the valley and culminated in nearby Arezzo an ancient settlement that was the site of an important Etruscan city. Some of Arezzo’s architectural heritage was lost to bombing in World War II, but much survives, including a Medici Fortress, Cathedral and the Bsilica of San Domenico. Arezzo is filled with art and is famous for its goldsmiths and antique traders.
The villa grounds enclose extended lawns that lead to a large swimming pool surrounded by a brick terrace with sun lounges. The simple peace and beauty is further enhanced by the spectacular views of the valley with its medieval villages, vineyards, olive groves and gentle hills covered in Cypress trees.
The exterior of La Famiglia looks much as it did when it was constructed and the interior reflects the planning and forethought that created the gracious and logical flow of the house. The villa is well appointed and has been restored and renovated with modern amenities and conveniences. The living areas are large and comfortable with whitewashed walls and heavy-beamed ceilings.
The main living room has a rich red and gold color palette with comfortable over-stuffed couches and a stone fireplace. A separate TV room offers comfortable seating for enjoying media. A library/den for more intimate gatherings or a quiet read is also on the main floor. A large billiard room with a full sized table is a perfect spot to while away an evening or a rainy afternoon. The kitchen is well equipped and has direct access to the gardens. There are two dining areas, the separate indoor dining room for more formal meals and a sheltered and glassed-in dining veranda that can seat up to thirty.
There are nine bedrooms, each boasting an en-suite or private bathroom. The bathrooms have all been completely restored, are medium to modestly sized and each has a bath tub.
La Familia offers a peaceful retreat amid rolling Tuscan hills in a region infused with history, art, architecture and fabulous wines. The area has much to explore and enjoy and La Famiglia is very well-suited for family gatherings, or group vacations with friends.
